Most of what we build here falls into two halves that have to agree with each other. There is the hardscape, the pavers and walls and shaded structures that give a yard its bones and decide where people actually walk. Then there is the planting and the irrigation that keep the whole thing alive without running the water bill up every summer. We size both to the property in front of us rather than to a template, because a half acre on the north edge of town and a zero lot line near the older core are not the same problem.
Being minutes away changes the work in a way that is easy to underrate. The same crew that breaks ground finishes the job, comes back for the walkthrough, and is still close enough to swing by when a valve needs a look two seasons later.
The ground
Caliche under a thin layer of native soil across much of the city, with grade that runs toward the street on most lots. Both decide how deep we dig and where water is going to end up.
The build
Base depth set for Arizona heat and monsoon runoff rather than the minimum that passes. Pavers get a compacted base and edge restraint, walls get drainage behind them, and planting goes in on a valve schedule that matches the plants rather than the calendar.
The follow through
One licensed crew from start to finish, and a yard we can be back at the same week if something needs attention. Being ten minutes away is the whole reason we still get calls about drives we laid fifteen years ago.
